Choosing a Sprocket Material

A motorcycle sprocket is a necessary component that helps transfer kinetic energy created by the engine to the back wheel, allowing the bike to accelerate and continue moving. This article looks at the process of choosing a sprocket material.
Understanding sprockets
There are hundreds of varieties of sprockets on the market, and choosing the ideal component is dependent on three factors: the width of the sprocket and chain, the tooth count of the sprocket and the material used to build the sprocket. The material is the most important factor in choosing a sprocket since the type of base material has a direct impact on the sprocket's lifespan.
Steel sprockets
Motorcycles are built and shipped with steel sprockets as an original equipment piece, and though these sprockets are heavy, they have two notable advantages over aluminum. One advantage is that these steel sprockets are more durable and less prone to wear. The engine and chain place the sprocket under constant street, and steel holds up better under stress than aluminum. A second advantage to steel sprockets is the cost as this is the cheapest material for a manufacturer to obtain.
Aluminum sprockets
Aluminum sprockets are the products of choice for motorcyclists seeking an aftermarket upgrade. The one notable advantage of aluminum is that this material is much lighter than steel, helping alleviate some of the weight of the bike. Despite the positive quality of less weight, aluminum sprockets wear much more quickly under engine strain and require replacement far more frequently than steel parts. Even for sprockets coated with a hardening substance, the base aluminum still receives the bulk of the generated force leading to little difference in wear between uncoated and coated aluminum sprockets.
When choosing a sprocket, the base material is a substantial consideration. Steel and aluminum sprockets have advantages and disadvantages every motorcyclist must consider.
